Bagni Delfino | Top-Notch Seafood in Sorrento

Located in the ancient fishing village of Marina Grande, Ristorante Bagni Delfino is considered the best upscale seafood restaurant in Sorrento. The restaurant is built on a long pier that jets out into the Bay of Naples, offering patrons an elegant ambiance to dine al fresco with stellar views, which are especially enhanced as the sunset ushers in the beauty of the night and the colorful, reddish-orange glow surrounds Mount Vesuvius on the horizon.

The menu is outstanding, featuring a vast selection of tempting dishes that pay tribute to the foods of the Sorrento Coast. Here customers can count on sizable portions of delicious food made to perfection with the best ingredients of the bay —and plated beautifully as well. The proprietors of the restaurant, the extended Gargiulo family —take pride in providing excellent service and a top-notch wine list to compliment the experience flawlessly.

During a recent lunch I was thinking about how it’s even possible that after all these years I am still as charmed as I was the first time to dine at this restaurant. It’s a wonderful experience, the whole of it —that leaves my palate so immensely satisfied every time. From the bright, colorful bruschette that are swiftly placed onto the table to welcome customers with a traditional Italian touch —straight through to breathing in the fresh sea air and quaintness of this ancient fishing village as you dine.

Depending on your mood, you can start the meal with oysters and caviar, or opt for one of the popular local specialties, like cozze alla marinara (sauteed mussels with tomato, garlic, and chili pepper) or polipetti veraci (baby octopus sautéed in tomato sauce), which are served with little bread crisps to soak up the delicious sauce. Or else, try one of the cold seafood salads, which are always an excellent choice. A couple of my favorites include the carpaccio di polpo con lamella di mandorle tostate e finocchi (octopus carpaccio with slivers of toasted almonds and fennel) and the insalata di mare (mixed seafood salad with octopus, cuttlefish, squid, shrimp, mussels and clams).

First course-wise, I recommend ordering one of the delicious house specialties, such as the calamarata “Delfino” (large tube pasta with clams, zucchine and shrimp in a cherry tomato sauce) or the Pacchero “Delfino” (large tube pasta with an exquisitely rich fish sauce).

Or else, the risotto ‘Delfino’ (seafood risotto with mussels, clams, squid, octopus and shrimp), which has an intense and pleasant taste of the sea —and compliments the beautiful vistas in every direction deliciously.

For the second course, the pesce fresco al forno o alla griglia (fresh daily catch, either baked in the oven or grilled) are always wonderful selections to taste the freshest fish. And if you’d like to try a mouth-watering mixture of different tastes, I’d go with the misto di pesce alla brace (mixed grilled local fish typically featuring calamari, tuna, swordfish, and shrimp). I recently tried the filetto di tonno in crosta di pistacchio (tuna fillet in pistachio crust) on the menu, which was very good as well.

To cap off the meal, Ristorante Bagni Delfino offers a fine variety of the local specialty desserts, from Caprese al cioccolato (flourless chocolate and almond cake from the island of Capri ) to baba al rum (the famous Neapolitan rum-soaked sponge cakes). But must say, I have a soft spot for their torta ‘Delfino’ (a fluffy, layered sponge cake filled with chantilly cream and tiny wild strawberries). It’s a perfectly dreamy dessert.
