Foodie Tips

Here are some of my favorite places to eat in our corner of Italy’s South; the Sorrento and Amalfi Coast, and Naples too. The list will be updated regularly as I discover new places and revisit old favorites and discover them anew. Even with a stellar reputation, as we all know, restaurants can change overnight. These are places that I recommend because I have had consistently good dining experiences, and hope that you will too.

Several of these restaurants I have worked with in the kitchen and have shared their recipes, or have written further about on the site. I’ve added a link at the end of the listing to explore more, if you like.

Buon Appetito!

Amalfi

Da Teresa → website

A fast but scenic boat ride from Amalfi’s port, this lovely restaurant and bathing establishment sits at waters edge on Santa Croce beach. This is an idyllic place to go if you would like to escape the frenzy of the city’s center for a while, dine on exceptional fish and seafood, and enjoy the relaxing lifestyle of the Amalfi Coast. Start the meal with the insalata di mare (cold fresh seafood salad) or the parmigiana di alici (anchovy parmesan), which is one of the best I have ever had. Follow up with the risotto alla pescatora (seafood risotto) or the large tube pasta with flying squid and tomatoes. For dessert, do not miss the sorbet filled frozen lemons. They are refreshing and perfectly sweet, a great top-off to the meal and palate cleanser as well. A wonderful experience. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Via Santa Croce, 1, 84011 Amalfi, SA, tel: 39 089 831237 – (explore more)$$$

Conca dei Marini

La Tonnarella O’Bacchiss → website

Tucked away in a pretty cove on the beach in Conca dei Marini, La Tonnarella is one of the most popular restaurants on the Amalfi Coast. Count on a rustic, warm and inviting atmosphere that provides a family friendly environment and mouth-watering dining experience. For fish and seafood lovers, this is a must-visit place. Begin with the antipasto della casa, then you can sit back and enjoy the medley of appetizing plates featuring the daily fresh catch circling the table. For the first-course, try the spaghetti alla Jaqueline, which is the house specialty pasta dish, made with zucchini and Italian bacon. Second course-wise, I’d go with the mixed grilled (or fried) fish and seafood, or the pesce all’ acqua pazza, which is a whole fish poached in its own juices with a few aromatics and tomatoes. Great service. Via Marina di Conca, 5, 84010, SA, tel: 39 089 831939 – Open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner, and Sunday and Monday for lunch only – (explore more) – $$-$$$

Dine on fresh seafood straight from the port and enjoy the old world charm and ambiance of the setting, and the striking view of the magnificent Aragonese castle on the horizon. The calamarata con cozze e pecorino (pasta with mussels and pecorino) is a must try. Open daily for lunch and dinner, closed Tuesdays. Just a few steps from the Sorgeto hot springs, one of Ischia’s natural wonders, is this wonderful restaurant, set atop the rocks just above the shoreline. Ask to see the tray of the daily catch. For a second course, try the whole fish, either grilled or all’acqua pazza (cooked in its own delicious broth). Ristorante Pizzeria Baia Nerano → website

Nerano is not lacking wonderful sea front restaurants, but for a reasonably priced, good meal with very friendly service, and good house wine, this place is hard to beat. Laid-back, kid-friendly environment, too. To start the meal the antipasto della casa is a favorite, which includes a medley of small tasty plates of traditional Neapolitan specialties, such as deep-fried assorted treats, marinated fish and seafood, grilled marinated seasonal vegetables, and fresh milky, balls of mozzarella. The scialatielli ai fruit di mare (homemade pasta with a light clam and mussel sauce touched with tomato), risotto alla pescatora (fishermen style) are excellent as is the pesce all’acqua pazza (freshly-caught whole fish cooked in its own delicious broth). This is also the go-to place for pizza, as it’s the only restaurant on the beach with a traditional Neapolitan wood-fired oven. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Piazza delle Sirene, 1/A, 80061 Marina del Cantone, Massa Lubrense, NA, tel: 39 081 808 1113 – $$

Perfectly set on waters edge with spectacular vistas of the Marina del Cantone, laid-back, easy-breezy Maria Grazia is definitely one of the best restaurants in Nerano, and a personal favorite of mine. The “antipasto di mare” (mixed seafood appetizers) or the “antipasto della casa” (mixed house appetizers) are great choices to begin the meal and get the chance to taste a mix of the local fare. A must-try is the Spaghetti alla Nerano, for a first course, which is the famous pasta dish from this lovely coastal town made with fried zucchini rounds, grated local cheeses, and basil —after all, it was created in this restaurant for the first time back in 1952.
